Subject: Thanks for GW Solo 5300 HOWTO From: stephenthomas@rampantsolutions.com Add to Contacts Date: Jan 29 2001 6:08:58 AM -0800 Your collective notes were useful to me in getting RH 7.0 up and running on my new laptop. I have a few notes of my own. I thought perhaps you might supplement your existing pages with these instead of me posting yet another site. ====================================== Gateway Solo 5300XL Installation Notes BIOS Settings Installed OSACPI Large Disk AccessOther SuspendSave to RAM The 10.0 GB hard disk has cylinders/heads/sectors of 1299/240/63. The Red Hat Linux 7.0 installation will prompt you for arguments to pass the kernel at boot time. I had to pass the argument hd=1299,240,63 in order for the system to boot past the L in LILO. This may be because I chose the "Large Disk Access" setting of "Other". Using the "Save to Disk" option in the Phoenix BIOS requires the creation of a special partition. Unfortunately, this partition renders the disk unreadable by Partition Magic 5.0. The X server from www.s3.com works well with XFree 4.0, however I did have to modify the install script by commenting out the section if [ ! -e /usr/X11R6/bin/XF86Setup ]; then echo You must have XFree86 installed. exit fi Running Xconfigurator, choose "Unlisted Card" and pick the XF86_SVGA server. For the monitor settings, choose Generic LCD Display at 1024 x 768 from the menu and you won't have to configure the settings by hand. KDE 2.0 looks really sharp on this machine.
